New Skater Intake
Come and join us
Find details of our latest intake here.
We have regular Skater Intake Programmes so if you just missed the most recent one please let us know and we’ll make sure you get onto the next one.
Our Skater Intake Programmes are delivered in collaboration with our sibling league DKRD (Dorset Knobs Roller Derby).
Is It For You?
- Are you 18 or over?
- Do you want to be part of something exhilarating?
- Do you want to do something you’ve never done before?
- Do you want to be part of a team?
- Do you think getting fit should be fun?
Our programme will teach you all the skills you need to play roller derby.
Can’t skate? No problem! Previous skating experience is preferred but not necessary, although we do like our new recruits to get some practice in before the intake begins (just so that you are able to skate across the hall).
Work hard and you’ll be playing hard in no time!
What You’ll Learn
Our New Skater Intake coaches and mentors will cover the WFTDA’s ‘This is Roller Derby’ curriculum and build up your skating skills week on week. You’ll be covering stops, falls, derby posture, blocking, footwork, pack awareness, building your endurance and skills to play the game.
We will also be asking you to get more skate time out of our sessions such as at roller discos and to be proactive learning the rules.
When And Where?
New Skater Intake sessions are running at limited capacity, due to the current pandemic. We will announce when we will be running a new intake on social media, so keep an eye out on Facebook and Instagram!
How Much Does It Cost?
There will be an initial sign up cost of £15. This will cover your first three training sessions, and will get you your rookie t-shirt when you complete your skills and join the main league sessions as a rookie skater!
After the first three sessions, you will move onto monthly payment of £28 per month, which will be payable on the 1st of each month.
How To Prepare
Derby is a contact sport and any sport has some injury risk. To keep you safe we make sure you kit up properly and get a good warm up. All skaters should bring the following protective gear:
- Quad roller skates with hard indoor wheels (around 92a or above)
- Helmet
- Kneepads (preferably heavy duty – you will be falling a lot and you get what you pay for)
- Elbow pads
- Wrist guards
- Mouth guard – Sisu ultrathin are popular
For start-up kit advice just get in touch with us or if you prefer to kick things off with a web search try the WFTDA guidance, or visit our wonderful pals, Double Threat Skates, who only sell kit specific to roller derby.
We have some spare kit (not mouth guards – yuk!) to lend out on a first come first served basis but encourage you to get your own kit as soon as possible.
You will need to sign a waiver form. Safety first!
